Motion Capture Motion capture (mocap) is the process of digital capturing an actor's movement in 3D space through markers placed on the person, or through point cloud 360 cameras tracking the actor or through a harness/ suit containing inertial sensors worn by the actor. Motion capture files can be used to produce 3D virtual animated models to be used within immersive environments, games and augmented reality experiences. Motion capture can be used for live performance, film making, game animation and o create 3D and 2D animated versions of: • Cultural dance styles and musician’s styles from around the world • The bat swing, basketball shot or soccer kick of world athletes • Human anatomical movement for bio mechanic research • Re-creation of historical figures • Current movers and shakers in the Humanities and Sciences • Global societal human gesture interactions for cultural study MSU School of Journalism Professors Stacey Fox and Joanne Gerstner along with students are working with the Smithsonian Latino Center in creating engaging immersive interactive experiences in the areas of animation storytelling and sports journalism through the use of motion capture technology. The School of Journalism also offers a course in Motion Capture techniques and animation. JRN 492 Section 741 - Motion Capture for Storytelling for 3 credits. The course is open to all students in any major. MSU School of Journalism has strategic partnerships with Noitom Perception Neuron motion capture and Reallusion animation allowing students to go live motion capture onto 3D characters in a scene. Students learn the process of planning and storyboarding a motion capture session, running a motion capture session, digital clean up and sequencing of mocap files and application of files to 3D and 2D characters.
